Promote on player.gg

player.gg is FirstLook’s public destination where gamers discover and sign up for playtests across the network. Listing your game there is the easiest way to put your playtest in front of new players outside of your community, and your game page is populated automatically from your Steam or IGDB page — so for most studios, flipping the toggle on is all it takes to have a complete, public listing with every sign-up landing cleanly in your existing funnel.

How players find you
Section titled “How players find you”Players who browse player.gg, or arrive from a Discord recommendation, land on a public game page with your branding, description, tags, trailer, screenshots, and available playtests. From there they can follow updates, wishlist across platforms, and sign up directly — either through your standard sign-up flow, or with a single click if they’re already a player.gg user.
Sign-ups originating from player.gg are funnelled into your waitlist with the default flow. A small banner shown to existing players on their dashboard also invites them to explore more games on player.gg, helping reach across the network as a whole.
Before you start
Section titled “Before you start”Make sure you have:
- A free FirstLook studio account with access to the game you want to list.
- A default sign-up flow for players who join from player.gg.
- A Steam App ID or IGDB page if you want FirstLook to auto-populate the listing.
- Access to generate a Steam Publisher WebAPI Key for verification.
- Any playtest dates or event windows you want to promote.
If your game is confidential, don’t publish the listing until Confidential Mode has been enabled by the player.gg team.
Enable the listing
Section titled “Enable the listing”Open Settings → Player.gg in your admin dashboard.

List my game on player.gg
Section titled “List my game on player.gg”Toggle this on to make your game discoverable across player.gg, Discord, and other FirstLook community channels. When it’s off, your game is hidden from public discovery and only reachable through your own invite links, codes, and sign-up URL.
Playtest Status
Section titled “Playtest Status”Set the status that best describes where your game is right now. This is displayed on your player.gg page and shapes how players understand what signing up means:
- Waitlist — you’re gathering interest and building a waitlist; no playtest is running yet.
- Playtesting — a playtest is live and players can be invited in.
- Early Access — the game is playable outside closed testing.
- Released — the game has shipped.
- Cancelled — the project is no longer active.
For upcoming tests, keep the status honest: if the build isn’t live yet, use Waitlist and add a Playtesting Event with the planned dates.
Enable one-click sign-ups
Section titled “Enable one-click sign-ups”With one-click sign-ups enabled, player.gg users can join your playtest instantly using their existing Email, Steam, or Discord account. Any custom sign-up questions you’ve configured will be skipped, and players won’t automatically join your Discord server.
Leave it off if you rely on custom sign-up questions or Discord membership to qualify your waitlist — for example for region selection, hardware checks, or Discord routing.
After you publish
Section titled “After you publish”Once the listing is on, check your game page from a logged-out browser session and confirm:
- Branding, description, screenshots, and trailer look correct.
- Wishlist and store links point to the right destinations.
- The sign-up button sends players into the intended flow.
- Your playtest status and event dates are accurate.
- Player attribution is showing in FirstLook for sign-ups from player.gg.
Your game page
Section titled “Your game page”Your player.gg page — description, tags, images, screenshots, trailer, and other metadata — is automatically populated from IGDB or Steam when your game is connected. For most studios this means the page is ready to go the moment you flip the listing toggle on: no manual content work required.
Connecting data sources
Section titled “Connecting data sources”- Steam — connect your Steam App ID under Settings → Steam to pull store assets, screenshots, trailers, and wishlist routing. Steam ownership verification is required for certain Steam-related features and for listing your game on player.gg — see Integrate Steamworks for WebAPI Key setup and Understanding Steam Keys, Branches, and Playtests for Steam playtesting guidance. If a Steam WebAPI Key isn’t an option for your studio, contact FirstLook Support for alternative verification options.
- IGDB — link your IGDB entry under Settings → Player.gg → IGDB ID to pull catalog metadata, genres, and tags. If your game is on Steam, FirstLook can fetch the IGDB ID automatically.
When both are connected, the two sources are combined for the richest page.
Manual overrides
Section titled “Manual overrides”If your game isn’t on Steam or IGDB yet, or you want to override what’s synced, the Manual Configuration section on the player.gg settings page lets you set:
- Description — a short summary shown on your game page.
- YouTube Trailer URL — used when no Steam trailer is available.
- Header image — recommended 1920 × 1080 px.
- Logo — no padding recommended.
Any value you set manually takes priority over the synced Steam or IGDB equivalent. A Custom Call to Action section further down lets you add a secondary button (e.g. “Back on Kickstarter”, a newsletter sign-up, or “View our devlogs”) alongside the automatic “Wishlist on Steam” button.
Set the player journey
Section titled “Set the player journey”Players who find your game on player.gg are sent into your default waitlist flow. Before publishing, review what those players will see after they sign up:
- The Sign Up screen explains what players are joining.
- The Waitlist screen sets expectations for next steps.
- The Complete screen includes useful calls to action, such as joining Discord or wishlisting.
- Your Branding settings use the right logo, colors, and images for this game.
- Any custom questions are still relevant for players arriving from public discovery.
If custom questions aren’t essential for qualifying your waitlist, the simplest journey is to turn on one-click sign-ups — it requires no further setup.
Playtesting Events
Section titled “Playtesting Events”Events are specific playtest windows you want to communicate to players — a closed pre-alpha weekend, a beta test, a stress test, a demo window, and so on. Each event appears on your player.gg page with its dates, and your game receives additional promotion across the network around those dates.

Click Add event to publish a new window, or Edit to adjust the dates of an existing one. Use events to:
- Preview your next playtest so interested players can sign up in advance.
- Pull organic sign-ups from player.gg around a specific test weekend instead of relying only on your existing waitlist.
- Give players on your dashboard a clear “next playtest” date to anchor their expectations.
- Promote a limited window without changing your entire flow.
- Keep players informed when a playtest is not always open.
Confidential games
Section titled “Confidential games”player.gg is also available for games under strict confidentiality. In Confidential Mode, only your game name and the branding and settings you configure yourself are shown to players — no studio name, Steam data, or other catalog details are revealed. Players can still discover and sign up for the playtest, but the public presentation is fully under your control.
Confidential Mode is enabled by the player.gg team on request. Reach out to FirstLook to have your game marked as confidential before listing — especially if your game is under NDA, unannounced, or operating under a codename.
Listing guidelines
Section titled “Listing guidelines”We curate player.gg so players can trust what they find there. To keep your listing in good standing, and eligible for promotion across the network, make sure it meets these guidelines.
What a good listing includes
Section titled “What a good listing includes”- Honest expectations. Keep your status, event dates, and media accurate, and follow through on the sign-ups you collect. Players should get what your listing led them to expect. For example, only set your status to Playtesting when a playtest is actually running or imminent; if you’re still gathering interest, use Waitlist so players don’t expect a key to arrive soon.
- A clear description of the game. Players should be able to tell what your game is and what they’re signing up for. This fills in automatically from Steam or IGDB; if you’re using Manual Configuration, write a description that explains the game.
- A capsule image. A header image or logo so your game is recognisable across player.gg, Discord, and other channels. This also comes from Steam or IGDB when your game is connected.
- A verified store page. Connect your listing to a real Steam or IGDB page. Listings with no store page, or with an unverified or mismatched one, may not be eligible for promotion until they’re connected. Pre-Steam and unannounced games can still list through Confidential Mode.
Keep sign-ups on the network
Section titled “Keep sign-ups on the network”Playtest sign-ups must run through player.gg or firstlook.gg. Don’t point your listing at other sign-up websites, forms, or tools. Keeping sign-ups on the network is what lets us route players into your funnel and measure what’s working.
What’s not allowed
Section titled “What’s not allowed”No scams, harmful games, or explicit content. Listings that mislead players, defraud them, or present harmful or sexually explicit material aren’t permitted on player.gg.
Staying in good standing
Section titled “Staying in good standing”Listings that don’t meet these guidelines risk being left out of the network’s automatic and curated distribution, including our social channels, newsletters, and high-ranking spots on the player.gg homepage. A listing that stays non-compliant, or is clearly misaligned with the spirit of these guidelines, risks being delisted or deranked.
We may update these guidelines as the network grows, and we can remove or hide a listing from player.gg whenever we feel it’s the right call for the network. We may also edit, rename, update, or correct your listing’s data and settings to keep the page accurate and consistent. If something here is unclear or you think your game is a special case, reach out to us.
